Why should I learn to draw?

Drawing is primarily a way of seeing rather than a way of doing. Studies show that artists eyes move differently when taking in a scene, compared to normal people. That way of seeing is extraordinarily useful in other activities. It is also philosophically very uplifting/purifying. There is a reason painting is one of the entry arts into Zen practice, along with things like archery and flower arrangement. I'd strongly recommend starting with Betty Edwards' "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" rather than more traditional learning techniques. Take a class based on the book if you can, rather than just reading the book. You should also read John Berger's "Ways of Seeing" to get a fuller answer to why you should learn to draw.
